Parent/Student/Staff Compact

All students have a right to and deserve a rigorous quality educational experience that enables them to meet graduation requirements and be ready for successful high school entrance.  The Jack H. Skirball Middle School community firmly believes that all students can and will achieve when there is a collaborative effort between staff, administrators, parents and students whereby each group clearly understands expectations and accepts responsibility for the successful education and college preparation of each individual student.

 Jack H. Skirball Middle School’s philosophy is that families, students, and school staff should work in partnership to help each student reach his/her potential to successfully enter high school and be geared up for college readiness. As partners we agree to make a commitment to work together to carry out this agreement.  Therefore, the Jack H. Skirball Middle School community agrees to provide and maintain a learning environment in which:

As a Jack H. Skirball Middle School student I will:
•    Believe that I can learn and will learn.
•    Read for at least 30 minutes, five days a week.
•    Come to class on time, ready to learn and with assignments completed.
•    Set aside time every day to complete my homework.
•    Know and follow Jack H. Skirball Middle School school and class rules.
•    Follow the Jack H. Skirball Middle School uniform dress code.
•    Regularly talk to my parents and my teachers about my progress in school.
•    Respect my school, classmates, staff, and family.


As a parent/guardian of a Jack H. Skirball Middle School student I will:
•    Talk to my child regularly about the value of education.
•    Monitor TV viewing and make sure that my child reads every day.
•    Make sure that my child attends school every day, on time, and with homework completed.
•    Support the Jack H. Skirball Middle School policies for discipline, uniform dress code, safety, proper school attire, project assignments, homework, attendance, textbook care, etc.
•    Monitor my child's progress in school.
•    Make every effort to attend school events, such as parent-teacher conferences, Open House and Back-to-School Night.
•    Participate in school, home, and community-sponsored activities to meet my agreed-upon responsibility of 20 hours per year.
•    Complete 20 hours of required parent volunteer service at Jack H. Skirball Middle School each year.
•    Participate in shared decision-making with school staff and other families for the benefit of students.
•    Respect the school, staff, students, and families.
•    Participate in advisory team support of my child, ongoing analysis of their student work portfolio and in the academic mentor volunteer program.
•    Attend Parental Learning Support workshops.


Jack H. Skirball Middle School and staff will:
•    Understand and teach grade level/course curriculum based on the California State Standards
•    Assign relevant individual and team student projects and communicate with parents regarding student academic and social progress.
•    Teach and involve students in classes that are interesting and challenging.
•    Communicate high expectations for every student and motivate students to learn.
•    Be in regular attendance and encourage students to achieve a 95% attendance rate.
•    Communicate Jack H. Skirball Middle School policies to students and parents regarding discipline, homework, attendance, grade level/subject area expectations
•    Enforce rules equitably and involve students in creating a warm and caring learning environment in the class.
•    Work to meet the individual needs of students in ongoing advisory counseling, coursework and assist in development and semester review of student’s learning plan
•    Maintain accurate records of student academic performance and behavior and communicate regularly with families about their child's progress in school.
•    Provide a safe, clean, positive, and peaceful school environment that supports student learning and personalized teaching.
•    Participate in professional development that improve teaching and learning and support partnerships with families and community.
•    Provide assistance to families on what they can do to support their child's learning.
•    Participate in shared decision-making with other school staff and families for the benefit of students.

CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCT

JACK H. SKIRBALL MIDDLE SCHOOL IS COMMITTED TO PROVIDING A SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS.  IN ORDER TO FOSTER THE ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF ALL STUDENTS, THE ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY ARE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN HELPING STUDENTS SOLVE PROBLEMS THAT INTERFERE WITH THEIR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT.

STUDENTS WILL BE SUSPENDED, OR RECOMMENDED FOR EXPULSION FOR COMMITTING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS:

1.    THREATENING OR CAUSING OR ATTEMPTING TO CAUSE, SERIOUS INJURY TO ANOTHER (FIGHTING).
2.    SELLING OR FURNISHING OF ANY CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE, OR INTOXICANT IN ANY FORM.
3.    POSSESSING, SELLING, OR FURNISHING ANY FIREARMS, KNIFE, EXPLOSIVE, OR OTHER DANGEROUS OBJECTS.
4.    DEFACING PROPERTY, EITHER DISTRICT OR PERSONAL.  PARENTS WILL BE HELD FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGES.
5.    COMMITTING PROFANE, VULGAR, OR OBSCENE ACTS; USING OBSCENE LANGUAGE.
6.    PERFORMING ANY ACT OF SEXUAL NATURE
7.    GAMBLING.
8.    SMOKING
9.    STEALING.
10.    CHRONIC AND CONTINUAL TARDINESS OR TRUANCY.
11.    THROWING OBJECTS, INCLUDING FOOD AND WATER.
12.    POSSESSING OR BEING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ANY CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES, OR INTOXICANT.
DISCIPLINARY ACTION WILL BE TAKEN WHICH MAY INCLUDE, BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO, SUSPENSION, AND/OR PAYMENT OF DAMAGES FOR THE FOLLOWING BEHAVIOR.

1.    WILLFUL DEFIANCE OF ADULT STAFF AND FACULTY MEMBERS OR DISRUPTING SCHOOL/CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES.
2.    ACADEMIC DISHONESTY, INCLUDING PLAGIARISM AND CHEATING.
3.    WRITING, MARKING GRAFFITI ON, OR DEFACING SCHOOL OR PRIVATE PROPERTY, INCLUDING TEXTBOOKS.  PARENTS WILL BE HELD FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE.
FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE FOLLOWING WILL LEAD TO DISCIPLINARY ACTION AND CONFISCATION.

 ITEMS WILL BE RETURNED TO THE PARENTS ONLY.

1.    DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR SCHOOL BY FOLLOWING THE UNIFORM POLICY.
2.    RADIOS, CAMERAS, TAPE RECORDERS, MP3 (IPODS, ETC…) PLAYERS, ELECTRONIC GAMES, AND BEEPERS ARE NOT TO BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL.
3.    CELLULAR PHONES ARE TO BE TURNED OFF AND KEPT OUT OF SIGHT.  THEY ARE NOT TO BE USED DURING SCHOOL HOURS OR ON THE SCHOOL GROUNDS.
4.    TOYS, FLOWERS, STUFFED ANIMALS AND BALLOONS ARE NOT TO BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL.
5.    EATING OR DRINKING IN CLASS, INCLUDING GUM CHEWING.
6.    POSSESSING ANY AEROSOL OR PUMP SPRAY CANS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO,  DEODORANT, HAIRSPRAY, AIR FRESHENER, OR OTHER SUBSTANCE.
